Bring on the Cake (Cards)! by Sphoorti

Greetings, Poppy Peeps!

I have two cards for you today! My cousin is getting married in June and a bestie is getting married in September, so I thought the timing of the May 2022 Release was just MEANT TO BE for me! And this was the release in which Poppystamps introduced hot foil plates, so it was a dream come true for this girl who's been foiling all the things lately! Let's get right into it!

Card # 1 (and my favorite of the two!):

This card combines 2 of my favorite things: Cakes and Flowers/Leaves. I used the Floral Cake Pop Up Easel craft die which was the highlight of this release for me (outside of the Hot Foil plates, of course), and MY! What an awesome product! It comes with a ridiculous number of dies (which cut out 40 designs)! Isn't that wonderful?! And those florals can be used anytime, anywhere! I went crazy and ended up with a plethora of die cuts (not just for these cards but for future ones), so you'll see these resurface multiple times. I hope you don't get bored of me using the same stuff over and over. They're just so cute!

I started off by die-cutting the various parts of the cake. For the two cake layers, after I cut them out, I ran them through the die cutting machine using the Stunning Mandala 3D Embossing Folder for that dry embossed effect. Don't you just love it? I've been meaning to use this for a while now, and thought it'd be perfect for the cake, and wow, I was not disappointed one bit. It was more beautiful than I imagined! (My pictures don't do it justice)

Another product in this release was the Layer Cake Drip Icing craft die and I used it to cut out silver glitter card stock with it to form the icing on the cake.

For the bouquet / florals - I had a few scraps of alcohol ink backgrounds I created the last time I had those supplies out (which was more than 2 years ago) and I found these green ones that I thought would go perfectly with the idea I had in mind. So, I cut up multiple leaves with these. I needed some leaves that were wider and took up more space to fill the bouquet, as well as some longer sprigs, so I decided to pull out some of the older dies that Poppystamps had (like the Leafy Garden Border craft die and the Maple Symphony craft die) and some leftovers from the last time I used the Slim Leafy Collage craft die. I arranged the leaves and decided to top them off with some flowers. I used the same glitter card stock for the flowers as I did for the icing, and put some pearls at the centers.

I hot foiled in gold the Congratulations sentiment from the Modest Greetings 1 Hot Foil Plate and Die set (I absolutely love this font!) and cut it out and positioned it on the bottom layer of the cake.

Do y'all remember the Cabin Snow Globe Pop Up Easel craft die from the 2021 Holiday release? It had a thin base bottom die that I used to help the card stand upright. I pulled it out to see if it would fit around the cake and it totally did! I cut up multiples and layered them on top of each other to form a chipboard like piece and placed it inside to use it as a stopper.

And that was it! What do you think? I'm absolutely in love with this card, so much so that I want to keep it for myself (shame on me, feel free to judge!), but I'll be a good girl and share the love. I hope my cousin and his wife love it too!

Card # 2 (The wedding-turned-birthday card):

I envisioned this as a wedding card and started with those intentions, but it ended up becoming a birthday card. Here's what happened.

Do y'all remember the Penelope Pinpoint Frame craft die? I thought it would be perfect for the cake layers (with the quilted look), so I cut up a layer with the frame. Then, I cut that piece up with the cake layers dies and assembled the layers together. I couldn't help but use icing, and I was going for a pure, clean, simple, monochromatic card, so I pulled out the diamond dust and applied it to the icing layers. I put pearls at the intersections, and I JUST realized as I'm typing this that one of the pearls moved! I'm going to have to retake the pictures before uploading them to Instagram because it's killing me (stay calm, my OCD). I guess I was so focused on taking the pictures that I didn't notice that the pearl moved. I don't remember where I got these pearls, but they had adhesive on the back already. I should have used liquid adhesive anyway for security. Lesson learned! For now, pretend I didn't bring this up and all is right with the card and the world. (Note: I just fixed it on the actual card, so I can sleep tonight).

Anyway, back to the making of the card - after assembling the cake, the top part looked a little empty, and I didn't want to use more florals on this card (the whole monochromatic thing was going well for me), but I needed some way to cover up the emptiness on top. I also wanted to use one of the foiled sentiments I made with the Birthday Wishes Poe Script Hot Foil Plate and Dies (there weren't any that said congrats in either set). I put it on top of the cake layer (like in the forefront) and it was covering up the icing and too much of the top layer, so I asked one of my besties for help - Judy Thai. She usually breaks ties for me when I can't make up my mind about where to place a sentiment. She's very creative and she suggested that I use it as a cake topper! Isn't that brilliant? I did just that and I think it looks great! I just wish I had a sentiment that was more wedding related because this looks more like a wedding cake, in my opinion. Maybe in a future release there'll be another hot foil plate with wedding sentiments and I can replace the Happy Birthday with that? What do you think? Do you think this can pass off as a regular Birthday cake and not a fancy wedding cake?

Everything else was the same as Card #1 (i.e. I used the thin base bottom die from the Cabin Snow Globe Pop Up Easel craft die from the 2021 Holiday release as the stopper for the easel as well as the base) and called it done!
