Thank you Otters
by JJ Bolton

   Jjbolton_otterwave1

Hi everyone!  My card today that uses one of the animals from the Christmas Friends stamp set in a non-Christmas-y way:)

I started by die cutting a panel with the Gentle Wave die.  Instead of using the die in the center of the panel, I die cut the design twice off the sides of the panel.  Then I colored the panel by spritzing it with water and then spray mists.  (I used watercolor paper BTW)  When you spray the paper first with water, the mist will spread over the paper instead of looking sprayed.

Then I stamped, die cut, and colored my little otters with markers.  To get the look of swimming otters, I tucked each one behind a "wave" before I glued them down.  I love those otter stamps!  So cute!

There are so many cute animal stamps in the last release, which one is your favorite?   Thanks so much for stopping by!  Have a wonderful day!

Blog Blitz: Christmas Otter
by JJ Bolton

  Jjbolton_otter1

Hi everyone!  Today, I have another Blog Blitz card using the new Merry Christmas Script word die!   I can't resist a good word die, and I really love the scale on this one.  I also used one of the cute little otters from the new stamp set, Christmas Friends.  I partially die cut the otter for the bottom of the card.

Jjbolton_otter3

Then I used one of the Stitched Landscape dies to make it seem that he was standing in a snowbank.

Jjbolton_otter4
For the sentiment, I die cut the word 3 times and then glued them together.  At the end, I covered it in a bit of glossy glue and let it dry.  Just a tip, don't be impatient like me and pick up the die cuts too early!  I should have let my dry a bit more, but I think it still came out okay:)  Here's a close up of the puffy/enameled look of the word die cuts.

Blog Blitz: Double Cut Puffy Snowtree
by JJ Bolton

Jjbolton_puffytree1

Hi folks!  I'm here with another new release Blog Blitz card!  I'm one of those funny people that love to make Christmas cards all year long.  So I was so happy to play with the new release dies!  Today, I have a card that used a number of die cutting techniques including partial cutting, double cutting, and inlaid die cuts.

When I was looking through my new release dies last week, I noticed that the We Wish You a Merry Christmas die fit nicely over the Puffy Snowtree die except for the star.  So my double cut is also a partial cut.  First I die cut the Puffy Snowtree on white cardstock.  Then I partial cut just the words of the We Wish You a Merry Christmas die by keeping the star part of the die off of the cutting plates.  I used a pen to mark where the star was to help me place the plates correctly.

Jjbolton_puffytree2

For the background, I used the Memory Box Tiny Dots stencil and Distress Inks.   I started by blending 3 types of Distress Ink onto a piece of watercolor paper.   Then I laid the stencil over the panel and gently wiped a baby wipe over the stencil removing the ink.  The last step was to blend white pigment ink over the stencil.

Jjbolton_puffytree3

I die cut the stenciled background with the Puffy Snowtree and then I inlaid the die cut into it.  To keep the inlaid die cut in place, I use plain invisible tape.

Jjbolton_puffytree6

To put the card together, I attached the panel over the card base with foam tape (I glued some silver glitter paper to the card base).  And then I added the star with foam tape and inlaid the red ornament (with more foam tape) for a bit of color.

Jjbolton_puffytree5

I love how the red ornament just pops out!  If you substituted the stenciled background with a bit of patterned paper, I bet this card would be pretty easy to make in multiples (for those who are already thinking about Christmas cards;).

Before I go, I want to remind you that all you have to do is leave a comment on this post to get the chance to win your very own Puffy Snowtree die!  Don't forget to comment on the other 2016 Holiday Release Blog Blitz posts too.  The Blog Blitz will run from July 6th - 18th and that means tons of chances to win.  To be entered into the each of the drawings all you need to leave a comment on EACH of the posts that you wish to enter.  One person will be chosen at random using a random number generator from each of the posts comments.  Only one prize per person per blog blitz.

Quiet Birds over Distressed Backgrounds
by JJ Bolton

Jjbolton_quietbirdsash5

Good morning all!  Happy July to everyone and a Happy (early) July 4th to everyone in the U.S.!  Today I have two cards to share with you using one of the new sash dies called Quiet Bird Sash.  These dies are unique in that they are open ended dies.  Because the ends of the die do not cut, you can do some pretty cool techniques like the one I'm showing today.

For both of my cards today, I made a custom window die cut using the sash die and simple shape dies.  The first step was to cut the sash die into a card panel.  The next step was to take a shape die and slip it behind the sash. [ I did 2 versions of this card, one with an oval window (below) and one with a square window.]  Now when you cut it, the sash will stay in place and only the window will be cut.

Jjbolton_quietbirdsash1

For inside the window die cuts, I created 2 distressed backgrounds using some Memory Box stencils (Garden Birch Trees and Texture Splatter).  I started by blending 2 types of Distress Ink onto a piece of watercolor paper (don't use cardstock).   Don't be stingy with the ink!  Then I laid the stencil over the panel and gently wiped a baby wipe over the stencil removing the ink.  The ink comes off pretty quickly and you do not have to apply a lot of pressure.  Here's an in-process picture using the Birch stencil and blue and green ink...

Jjbolton_quietbirdsash3

And here's one using the Splatter stencil over yellow and coral ink...

Jjbolton_quietbirdsash2

The last step is to just apply the window cutout over the background with foam tape.  I really love how the backgrounds turned out and how they look in the cutout windows.  The distressed, muted backgrounds give a lot of texture and color without getting too busy.

Mini Stamps Blog Blitz - Ornamental Butterflies
by JJ Bolton

Jjbolton_ornamentalbutterflies1f

Hi guys! I'm continuing the Mini Stamp Blog Blitz with two cards using the Ornamental Butterflies stamp set and coordinating die set!  I have a soft spot for butterflies, so I was so happy to see these sets!  For my first card, I used the butterfly die to create a negative die cut that I backed with an ink-blended background.

Jjbolton_ornamentalbutterflies1b

For a little added detail, I heat embossed in clear the swirly design inside the butterfly.  Here's a close up of the embossing...

Jjbolton_ornamentalbutterflies1a

I also made another quickie card using all of the butterfly dies and a piece of watercolored paper that I had saved for a rainy day project.

Jjbolton_ornamentalbutterflies2

When I have my watercolors out, sometimes I make four or five sheets at a time.  This rainbow piece fit perfectly behind the die cut butterflies.  I put the sentiment on a piece of vellum so it would not cover up much.  So easy!

Jjbolton_ornamentalbutterflies2b

The Mini Stamp Blog Blitz will continue tomorrow, so don't forget to stop by!  And don't forget to leave a comment for a chance to win one of the new stamp sets!  (Yes, you CAN comment on each post!)  You have until June 2, 12:00 midnight US EST to leave comments. Winners will be announced June 4th!

Thanks so much for stopping by today!  Have a wonderful week!

Birthday Balloons
by JJ Bolton

  Jjbolton_balloonBD1

Just stopping in today with a fun birthday card to share!  May is a crazy month of birthdays for our family.  My twin sons, husband, father, sister, and brother-in-law all have birthdays this WEEK!  So this card is very appropriate:)  To make this card, I started off by die cutting the stitched square.  Then I die cut the "birthday wishes" into the square and inlaid it with a metallic gold version.  Just for fun, the square is offset on the card base.

Jjbolton_balloonBD1a

Then I die cut a variety of balloons in different colored vellum and arranged them around and behind the square.  Vellum can be tricky to work with, so I try to hide the glue behind card stock pieces or where the vellum overlaps.

Thanks so much for stopping by today!  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Monkeying Around
by JJ Bolton

Jjbolton_hbdmonkey1

A bit late with my post, but better late than never;)  I've got another Blog Blitz card today using the new Jumbled Happy Birthday Die!  This die is extra special for two reasons, it's oversized and it's only 2 pieces.  This die is so intricate and it makes a perfect jungle gym for a trio of monkeys:)  My three monkeys were die cut and colored with copics before assembly.  With a fine tipped pen, I drew in some eyes and outlined the die cut mouths.   These three monkeys are all separate dies, the Dancing Monkey, Hopping Monkey, and Happy Monkey.  Aren't they cute?     Jjbolton_hbdmonkey1b

For the background, I blended some natural green inks and then splattered with water and white mist spray.  The die cut words are attached with some thin foam tape.  This allowed me to hang my little monkeys.  I hope this card puts a smile on the birthday boy's face!

Thanks so much for dropping by today!  Before you go, don't forget to leave a comment for a chance to win one of fantastic Jumbled Happy Birthday die!

Blog Blitz: Gentle Koi
by JJ Bolton

Jjbolton_gentle1

I'm excited to be here on Day 2 of the new release Blog Blitz!  I hope you had a chance to stop by yesterday to see the amazing set of dies Jeanne debuted.  They are so cool!  Speaking of cool, I'm in love with this Gentle Wave die.  It makes a perfect wave background, but I can think of all kinds of ways to use this die.

  Jjbolton_gentle1a

For this card, I watercolored a panel and then die cut it with the Gentle Wave die.  I layered it over a piece of light blue vellum.  In person, the vellum gives the waves a really soft look.  I also used watercolors to color my koi fish.  Koi are naturally splotchy, which is so easy to do with watercolors.  I just die cut the fish using watercolor paper and then sprayed them with water.  Then I picked up the watercolor and just touched it to the fish.  The color will spread by itself and then all you have to do it set it with a heat gun.  Super easy!

Jjbolton_gentle1b

Thanks so much for stopping by today!  And with all Blog Blitzes, all you have to do is leave a comment for a chance to win one of these awesome Gentle Wave dies!

Peekaboo Shaker
by JJ Bolton

  Jjbolton_butterfly1

There's a lot of stuff going on with this card today, so let's get to it:)  When I saw the Jourdana Collage die, I knew that it would make a great background.  This dies works great with a colored panel behind it (blended ink, watercolored, colored card stock, etc.).  But today, I decided to make a shaker behind the die cut!  Here's a look at the back of the front panel. A couple tips about shaker cards.  It always take more filler than you think and use foam tape to keep the filler in the right place.  You see those 2 pieces of foam tape in the corners?  Those will keep the filler from falling down into a spot that is not visible from the front.

Jjbolton_butterfly2a

This card also has a little watercolor butterfly. To get the look, I watercolored it, sprinkled on some watercolor powder, sprayed it with white mist, sprayed it with shimmer mist, and then  sprinkled large hex glitter on it.  Whew, heehee!

Jjbolton_butterfly2b

I used a strip of card stock for my sentiment, and then I added the butterfly just over the sentiment.

Jjbolton_butterfly2

I hope everyone has a wonderful week!  Thanks so much for stopping by!
