Embossing Die Cuts

Hi everyone, Sue here.  Today I want to talk about using other mediums on our die cuts to add texture and visual interest.

Hand In There Closeup

Most of the time we use white or coloured card stock with our dies and may use a medium such as ink, paint or glitter.  But what about using embossing powders or flock on die cuts? These products have been around for ages and are inexpensive to add to our stash.  They also come in oodles of different colours.

Poppystamps Embossed Weeping Willow

I die cut the Weeping Willow Branches from white card stock, used a Versamark ink pad (or any clear embossing ink) to cover the die cut, sprinkled it with a verdigris embossing powder (there are several colours in this powder) and heat set it.  Such an easy way to get some texture.

Poppystamps Embossed Kitty

I did the same thing with one of the Friendly Kitties die cut, this time using an embossing powder that has several shades of brown and brown glitter in it.

Poppystamps Fun Flock

For the last die cut I added double sided adhesive to white card stock, die cut the kitty and added fun flock on top of the adhesive.  Instant kitty softness!

Poppystamps Embossed Die Cuts

I used textured card stock for the card base and for the grass to add visual interest.  I also cut another Weeping Willow, this time from vellum to place behind the embossed Weeping Willow. This also adds depth and texture.

Hang In There Card

Did you know Poppystamps has Digital Dies that can be used with electronic die cut machines?  They can all be found here.  I used the Butterfly Chain Border Digital Die to create my butterflies, which were cut from white card stock and coloured with inks.

Hang In There

Thanks for visiting with me and I hope I've inspired you to try out some of these techniques.

Digital Die Winners

Thanks for all the sweet comments left last week when we featured our digital dies.

Yes!  Poppystamps has many digital dies that match stamps as well as some of our steel die designs. They are an inexpensive way to add to your die collection and work with most electronic cutters.  They are also really versatile because you can change the size for any project - a card, or even a scrapbook layout.  You can see all the Poppystamps digital dies here.

I'm excited to share the two winners from our event who have already been contacted by email:

Congratulations ladies!

Autumn Splendor with Digital Dies

Poppystamps Digi Die Blitz

Welcome to the Digital Die Blitz week at Poppystamps. The following cards were made using Poppystamps Digital Dies. These are file based cuts that you use with your electronic digital cutters. I used my Cameo. Poppystamps blog will be featuring digi dies  on 11-11 through 11-14.  Two random commenter's will be selected to win 10 free digi dies of their choice.  Comments can be made through 11-18 and the winner will be announced on 11-20.

I made two Fall themed cards.

I used the maple leaf die, inked them and ran them through my Big Shot with a Herringbone embossing folder for texture. I also ran the brown cardstock strip through my woodgrain embossing folder. The looped border is a digi die . Glued all layers as shown, added a natural string triple bow to top. Studio Calico wood veneer piece wit sentiment to carry off the natural theme of the card. I hope you like it.

The nice things about the digital dies that you don't get with the traditional ones is that you can re-size them to fit your project! I could use the same loop border and made it to fit a 12 inch scrapbook page! Such versatility!

 Card Two

Same Leaf Die along with the wreath die. Poppy Cling sentiment.

All the leaves were cut out from cardstock, then I sprayed and inked. Sprays are Tangerine and wheatfields glimmer mist. This gives the leaves shimmer and I crinkled them while wet to add texture. Layered around the wreath.  Love the gold wired bow! Would make a great hostess thank you card for a fall or thanksgiving gathering.

Be sure and check out these other members of the DT for there creation's using the digital dies from Poppystamps. Be sure and comment on the Poppy Blog and here for your chance to win 10 digital cuts from Poppystamps!

The Joy of Giving

The Joy of Gifting

Leaves final

This is an extremely simple card that can be mass produced if you have several people that are receiving gift cards or a single person who is one of those no-frills people that still like a little holiday joy (like my Dad).

JoyGiftCard

Signature

I used a gold metallic paper, a gold vellum to line the inside of the card, some string to string the banner and Poppystamps digital dies.

JoyInside

The inside of the card shows the digital die cutting for the gift card.  A wee bit of the top of the card is showing in the photo which is the gold vellum that lines the front panel.  You can be as ornate or as simple as you like and you can determine how big (or small) you wish to make a gift card holder so why pay $3 and $4 at the stores for one?

Supplies:

147 - Scalloped Border Poppystamps digital die

173 - Scalloped Notches Poppystamps digital die

170 - Retro Border Poppy stamps digital die

Die cutting machine (I used Silhouette Portrait)

Card stock

Glue (or your preferred adhesive)

String

Poppystamps digital dies are fantastic as you can add your own text (like I did to the banners) and you can resize to fit your card, select all or a portion of the image, repeat the image without worrying about the metal die slipping and mass produce cards.  Now, I am NOT giving up my metal dies but it is nice to have options.  Plus, you can combine both digital and metal dies and pick a technique to customize your cards!

Each image file comes formatted as .ai, .dfx. jpg., pdf., png, and .svg to work with just about every electronic cutter.  You can see all the images available here.

If you have a digital cutter you will want to watch the blog this week.  We will be featuring Poppystamps digital dies for the next few days and choosing two random commenters to receive 10 free digi dies of their choice.   All you have to do is leave a comment by 11-18 on any of the posts (November 11-14) featuring the digi cuts.  Winners will be posted by Jeanne on 11-20.

Thanks for checking out my gift card holder and don't forget to leave a comment!!

Got Digis? Digital Die Mini Blog Hop

Leaves finalGot digis?  Electronic cutters are so popular and for so many good reasons!  Don't get me wrong - I still love my metal dies and you couldn't talk me into doing away with them for anything - but there are times when a digital die just makes more sense.  Digital dies are really inexpensive, versatile (since you can size them up or down to fit just about any project), and the are always exactly where you left them (on your hard drive silly!).  I like to reach for a digital die when I have to make lots of cuts for mass producing a project. I can cut a whole sheet of images in just a few minutes.   Or when I'm working on a scrapbook layout - I can size the image to fit any size page!

Did you know Poppystamps has digital dies of some of their most popular metal die designs? Each image file comes formatted as .ai, .dfx. jpg., pdf., png, and .svg to work with just about every electronic cutter.  I like that I can get my image quickly too since it's emailed to me almost immediately.  You can see all the images available here.

I made this fall inspired card featuring the maple leaf, oak leaf, acorn, doily, and tag digital dies.   I added lots of embossing and ribbon to add texture.
